The Childhood Cancer Research Trust has been set up by Kasper and his family. Kasper was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma just before his 16th birthday. Despite the kindest and best oncological teams the journey is a traumatic one and the treatment protocols necessarily cause devastating permanent damage.

Kasper’s hope is that children in the future will have a real chance of better outcomes through targeted medicine.

Childhood cancer research is seriously underfunded because it only represents a small proportion of total cancers. Even now, the only treatment options we have to offer our children still involve poisoning at levels that would be ruled inhumane against enemies in warfare. As a result, even if they survive, children are often left with devastating, permanent damage from their treatments.

Childhood cancers may only represent a small proportion of total cancers however the average age of childhood cancer sufferers is just 6 years and the average age of adult cancer suffers is 70 years. Adults with cancer may lose a precious slice of life but children stand to lose a lifetime.

The Childhood Cancer Research Trust invites cancer research experts to propose research projects which they believe will further understanding of childhood cancers at a molecular level. If data is collated and analysed for features that drive outcomes, standard of care treatment protocols in future could be less severe for children with a lower risk of refractory disease and more targeted for children with a molecular likelihood of poorer outcomes.

100% of the donated amount will be distributed by The Childhood Cancer Research Trust to research teams who have specific relevant expertise and experience such as the Institute of Cancer Research in London.

Kasper: “My own survival is not in my control but what I do know is definitely possible, is making a positive difference to the outcomes of children who come after me.”
